The last stop on our Garden Route itinerary was Plett. After all that hiking and activity in Tsitsikamma we needed a few days to recuperate before we started the long journey home.
Instead of returning via Beaufort West, we decided to stop over in Graaf Reinet on the way back to Johannesburg. We heard so much about this charming little town, and really wanted to see the Valley of Desolation in the Camdeboo National Park. For the avid photographers out there, if i may say “this award winning photo” was taken at sunset.
The route from Plett to Graff Reinet…
There is a shorter route from Plett to Graaf Reinet, but it seems to be via gravel road. Because we were in a sedan and not an SUV, we drove back to George from Plett.
On route to Graaf Reinet, there are beautiful farmlands, and the road which passes through Willowmore is quiet and in very good condition.
Our home in Graaf Reinet
When planning our itinerary, we received a number of recommendations for an overnight stay at the Drostdy Hotel. And we absolutely loved the experience. Not just because it was unique, but the food and hospitality was really world-class. Here’s what we thought about it…
One of the highlights of our stay was the food. The restaurant has quite a romantic ambience at night, so don’t skip dinner. And when in the Karoo, always go for the lamb.
Breakfast was a real treat. There is a continental buffet breakfast, and warm meals on order.
It was a long 8-hour drive back home, and in hindsight we should have probably had a break in between and arranged an overnight stay in another one of SA’s charming little towns.
